As proud residents of City Island, we are passionate about our unique community. Like many Islanders, the tranquility that washes over us as we cross the City Island Bridge returning home is a feeling we cherish.
Our community’s history as the “Seaport of The Bronx” is deeply ingrained in our culture, evident in our yacht clubs, marinas, and boatyards, and in the countless vessels crafted here over the centuries.
So why, as New York City invests more into the NYC Ferry service, with routes seeing record ridership, is our maritime haven being excluded from this transportation network?
Bronx, NY, September 26, 2022 – Examined in this episode of BronxTalk are two issues on City Island, a neighborhood in northeastern Bronx in New York City. Those issues are (1) whether there should be a City Island ferry stop and (2) how to protect the historic island’s shorelines from the ongoing effects of climate change.
The guests are John Doyle and David Diaz from City Island Rising and Katie Graziano, a Coastal Resilience Specialist from New York Sea Grant.
On this episode, why a push for a new ferry to City Island is making waves. Concerns over rising sea levels and how it may affect the coastal community. We profile a cozy diner that’s become a mainstay in the area. We’ll tell you about the sea side settlement’s nautical history, and the story of a land lubber who came to the island nearly fifty years ago and never left.
Community leaders and elected officials are pushing for NYC Ferry service to come to City Island.
John Doyle, a board member of City Island Rising, says the group has collected nearly 1,000 signatures toward the cause. He says the average commute for City Island residents to the Manhattan is about an hour and a half.
“If we would bring a ferry here, we would cut that time more than half,” he told News 12.

Now that the Soundview ferry route reaches up to Throggs Neck, nearly 1,000 City Island residents say they want water transit too.
The NYC Ferry, which is highly subsidized by the city and costs $2.75 to ride, travels along the east side of Manhattan from Wall Street to Soundview, and since December, Throggs Neck’s Ferry Point Park in the Bronx.
