Our members are
building City Island
Improving the quality of life in our community for all residents and businesses is our objective. Rather than feeling isolated and powerless, residents join together in our association to leverage solutions to community problems. We strive to maintain a free, open and democratic association of neighbors and interested parties with a connection to our island.
In its four years in operation, City Island Rising has had some success on:
- Voicing support for new speed cameras
- Advocating for first new traffic light in 35 years
- Supporting “daylighting” on low visibility street corners
- Public transportation issues
- Hosting a Narcan/CPR training
- Community clean up
- An environmental justice forum
- Water quality forum
- Working closely with the Community Flood Watch Program to document flooding and climate change within the community
- Hosted two Census sign-up events that informed and interacted with hundreds of our neighbors
- Hosted a Teacher Appreciation Day event for our local school and an electronics recycling event that collected nearly 6,000 lbs of electronic goods
- During the COVID-19 Pandemic, we’ve donated food and face masks to those in need. Our group achieved 501c3 status two years ago and is a registered charity with the NYS Attorney General’s Office
- Started advocating for an NYC Ferry Stop within our community
- Started warning of the effects of climate change within our community
- Shined a spotlight on parks inequity within the Bronx
- Organized a successful clothing donation drive for asylum seekers and migrants
- Crowd-raised funds to build a memorial for a victim of gun violence
- After the City of New York cut composting to our community, we recently started a weekly food-scrap drop off site
